Gatwick Airport's 2025 Design Framework: Enhancing Capacity and Passenger Experience

In 2025, London Gatwick Airport launched its new Design Services Framework, part of an ambitious capital investment programme aimed at increasing the airport’s capacity and improving the passenger experience. As part of this four-year framework, Gatwick appointed 16 specialist designers, including Kent Construction Consultants, one of the selected SMEs. Our involvement will see us contributing to a range of critical projects, including retail reconfigurations, surface access management, property upgrades, and the enhancement of automated baggage handling systems. The framework facilitates the fast deployment of design services with pre-agreed terms across various disciplines such as architecture, engineering, structural, and fire safety design. At the heart of the framework is a commitment to safety, security, and sustainability, aligning with Gatwick's 'Decade of Change' programme. The initiative also promotes local and regional business opportunities, with a focus on achieving a minimum of 10% of total spend with local suppliers and 25% with regional suppliers. As part of our involvement, Kent Construction Consultants is committed to driving sustainable design solutions, helping Gatwick reduce its carbon footprint while supporting the airport’s long-term growth.

Delivery Through
NEC4 Contracts

Gatwick Airport’s new Design Services Framework, launched in 2025, represents a significant step forward in the airport’s ambitious capital investment programme. To ensure the efficient and effective delivery of its projects, Gatwick is utilizing the NEC4 contract framework, a flexible and collaborative approach to project management. NEC4 contracts are known for promoting proactive risk management, transparency, and clear communication between all parties involved, which is crucial for high-profile infrastructure projects like those at Gatwick.

Under this framework, Kent Construction Consultants, along with other selected SMEs, will be responsible for delivering a range of projects, including terminal upgrades, surface access improvements, and new baggage handling systems. By leveraging NEC4 contracts, the airport ensures that all aspects of design and delivery are aligned with agreed-upon timeframes, budgets, and quality standards, while allowing for flexibility in response to unforeseen challenges. The emphasis on collaboration in the NEC4 framework ensures that stakeholders—including contractors, designers, and the airport—work together seamlessly to achieve shared objectives.

The NEC4 framework supports Gatwick’s sustainability goals, with projects designed to minimize environmental impact and improve energy efficiency. Through the use of NEC4 contracts, Gatwick aims to foster long-term partnerships with suppliers, drive innovation in project delivery, and maintain the highest standards of safety, security, and operational performance.
